As a valued client of Herbert Scott, you already understand the importance of proactive, long-term financial planning. But even with a robust plan in place, it’s valuable to pause and reflect on how you talk about money – not just with your adviser, but within your family and wider circle. That’s the thinking behind Talk Money Week, an annual UK initiative designed to help everyone feel more confident discussing their finances.
Held every November, Talk Money Week is led by the Money and Pensions Service. The initiative aims to reduce the stigma around money by encouraging individuals, families, and communities to engage in open, honest conversations about financial wellbeing.
Talking About Money Is Part of Financial Wellbeing
Financial wellbeing isn’t just about numbers or investment performance; it’s about clarity, confidence and control. Talking openly about money – with your partner, family, business associates or financial planner – helps ensure that your decisions are informed and sustainable
For those managing significant wealth, these conversations can have an even greater impact. Whether it’s ensuring your children understand the responsibilities that come with inherited assets, or aligning charitable giving with family values, open dialogue brings about better outcomes, stronger relationships, and less stress.
Why Money Conversations Still Matter
- They Keep Goals Aligned
Life changes – business changes, relationships, health, family growth, retirement transitions. Regular conversations ensure your financial plans keep pace with these shifts.
- They Strengthen Relationships
Whether you’re talking with a spouse, a business partner, or adult children, open money conversations help avoid misunderstandings and build trust.
- They Support the Next Generation
Many of our clients are focused on building a legacy or supporting younger family members. Sharing financial knowledge and values is the foundation of wealth transfer.
- They Help Reduce Stress
Even well-organised finances can sometimes feel overwhelming. Being able to talk openly – with us or others – helps transform worry into action.
- They Empower Others
Money Week also encourages those who feel less confident about money to seek advice. By leading through example, you’re helping to shift attitudes in your wider circle – at work, at home, and in your community.
How You Can Take Part
As someone already engaged in financial planning, here are a few meaningful ways to connect with the spirit of Money Week:
- Check in with your financial planner at Herbert Scott – If your circumstances have changed, or if you’ve got new goals in mind, please make sure you bring this up at your annual review, or if urgent please contact us. It’s what we’re here for.
- Start a family money conversation – We regularly host intergenerational meetings where families come together – sometimes with their solicitor or accountant – to discuss Wills, gifting strategies, and legacy planning. These meetings foster transparency, understanding and long-term confidence.
- Share your knowledge -Whether it’s mentoring a colleague or simply encouraging a friend to get financial advice, your experience could be invaluable.
- Review your financial wellbeing – It’s not just about how your portfolio is performing but feeling in control of your financial decisions and confident in your future.
Our Role In Your Financial Journey
At Herbert Scott, we see Money Week as a timely reminder of why we do what we do, helping people make informed, confident decisions about their money. We’re proud to support your financial journey and encourage these important conversations year-round.
Getting Your Family Talking
Our office is a welcoming space to bring your family and start important conversations about money. We are increasingly being asked to chair family meetings. Recently, one of our planners hosted a meeting with six family members and their solicitor to have an open, productive discussion about Wills and how the parents wish to pass on their wealth. It was a great example of how talking together can bring clarity and peace of mind.
As a friendly and approachable financial advice firm with 30 years of experience, we’re always here to help wherever we can. We never turn away someone in need of financial help – even if our full-blown service is not the right fit for their needs, we’re happy to offer guidance, share financial education, or connect them with someone who can.
Money Week Is The Perfect Time To Do It.
Let’s talk money and make it meaningful.
