From Classroom to Career: Introducing Students to Financial Services

For a week this month, we were proud to host a Year 10 Lewes Grammar School Student, Sean. It’s been a little while since we have hosted a work experience student, but we had a full week of activities planned for him.

Sean was very engaged and keen to learn about the different routes into the industry and how he could apply the maths skills he had been learning at school to a role in financial services.

This is what Sean said about his week:

“I chose to do my work experience at Herbert Scott to gain insight into a professional environment in chartered finance and learn what qualifications and skills are needed for a career in the industry. My week was both highly enjoyable and incredibly informative. I had the opportunity to observe different departments, sit in on meetings, and support the team with small office tasks.

Each day included one-to-one sessions with team members from various roles. These sessions gave me a clear understanding of the different pathways into financial planning, the qualifications required, and how Herbert Scott fits into the wider financial market alongside banks and investors.

Being still in school, I had heard terms like pensions, ISAs, shares, and bonds but didn’t fully understand them. This week really boosted my confidence in financial concepts that are important in adult life and personal money management.

I also developed valuable workplace skills, such as handling client data securely, setting up professional meeting rooms, and using digital tools for financial planning.

Overall, the staff were incredibly kind, informative, and supportive. Herbert Scott’s professionalism and strong client relationships made a lasting impression on me. It was a brilliant experience I’ll always remember.”
